I very rarely get very upset on the golf course. After all, golf is a game for relaxation. I have always thought.... if you are not enjoying yourself on the golf course you should go sailing, or rock climbing, or lay on a hill and look at the clouds. There is only one time that I have ever thrown a golf club while on the course, and that took place on the famous Wilson Road course while losing to Cole Calland, but that is a whole other story. I have to admit, the second time occured last evening at the GCD. "Nothing to be proud of Russ"
I teed off on the famous par 5, number 13 and hit a very poor, short drive to the left side of the fairway. It was going to be very close whether or not the ball way in the pond or not. Diwik was nice enough to help spot my drive by shouting "go to the ladies tees and walk left", thanks Jason. Once there, I was overjoyed to find my Srixon ball sitting up in a poor lie, but not wet. I took a pitching wedge and hacked away, the ball popped up and was back in the fairway. I was a good 180 yards to cut the corner to arrive safely in the fairway. Schoemer plunked a ball into the water, but I still felt that an easy 5 wood would put be back in this hole. I hit a good 5 wood, but for some reason the ball actually turned over and was heading left into the water. Frustrating. I drove up the edge of the water, where Scott and I prepared to take our drops. I was now going to hit a 6 iron and just get the ball into the fairway and try and make a 7. I dropped the ball and it went straight into a hole. OK, no big deal, stay down on it and everything will be fine. I took a terrible over the top swing, which resulted in the ball going 10 yards into the water. Shaffe was no where to be found, so I took a swing at the golf cart. The shaft of my 6 iron had no chance as it shattered. Part of the shaft came back up and hit me in the neck. That was the second time, I have ever thrown a club on the course. Dear Golf Gods, I would like to take this time to apologize for my poor behavior on #13 last evening. It will not happen again. Thank you in advance for your forgiveness. Also, thank you to Greg who was nice enough to get my 6 iron reshafted in time for Friday. Also, thank you to Greg and Ryan for making a 98 Vegas score to match Fry and I who also made a 98.
In other CGA news, Jay Feller is the hottest player. He followed up his 41 last week with a fine 43 to take Swanny out who was leading the individual race. In doing so, Feller climed up to #5 in the standings and has Dr. Jay in 4th overall and 1st in the second half. Ever since he went on vacation he has been a different golfer.
Pete Ebel shot a 46, net 42 to easily defeat Greg May 12 to 3. Pete has played just well enough to win each week, while also keeping his handicap in check. Bud-E-bel took over the team race, but will hit a bye on Monday, which might slow them down just a tad. Look for Porta Joe's to take it back over after next week.
Handicaps- Congratulations to Smokin Joe and George Tzagournis who have worked their handicaps down to a 13. Smokin Joe is playing some of his best golf of the season, 4 rounds a week is starting to pay off. Also, Doug May has gone from a 3 back up to a 5. I know this because I was awaken by a call at 6:30 am from big brother Greg. "Greg, what are you doing... it is 6:30" "Brad, I had to call you..all is right in the world again, my handicap is back below little brother Doug."
I will bring the major sign up sheet to the course on Monday. Major is Saturday, August 22nd -with first tee times around 9:30 am. Ryan Webb has agreed to take on the administration of the tournament. John Brinkman will handle games & entertainment. Rob Burkley will conduct fishing trips. Greg and I will handle all tournament rules/format, etc.
