Heavy rain hit Columbus on this past Monday, which normally would be fine, however this was Opening Day in the CGA. The past three or four Mondays had been really nice, actually perfect golf weather, so you can imagine the shock that was circling through Crony Nation. The league office was very busy all morning basically handling the same call/text/email: "It does not look good, however, the league office will make an announcement at 3:00 pm."
The rain slowed and the Cronies headed to the course. Warming up on the range the wind was at an all time high even for GCD. Jay Feller hit the ceremonial first tee shot as the 2009 CGA League Champion and the 2010 CGA season was underway. By the way, 2010 marks the 10th year of the league. The rain and the
clouds parted, moved out, and low and behold the sun came out. One crony even muttered, "the sun always seems to shine on the Cronies, somehow, someway".
Chuckie West, showing you don't have to use Dan Freiburger, used sub Brett Southworth to roll to a 33.50 to 11.50 victory over May K'Ebel. Brett shot the low round of the week which was a 40/net 36. The round brought back a bunch of great Happy Days memories. I told myself I would let this go and not stoop to this level, but I just can not help it...... Brad Underwood putted three putts that were inside the leather. The three putts measured out at 8.2", 7.4" and 6.1". It just seemed to me that Doug May was taking his driver frustrations out on me. It really did not bother me, it was more of me being embarrassed for Doug. Anyway, as I stated, I really did not want to bring this up, so let's just move on. You can do it Doug. Just say the words "that is good". Practice them at home in front of the mirror or Sarah can help you. Sorry, there I go again.
Dr. Red Love turned in a nice performance by defeating Double F'in Trouble. Hosket took down the 2009 CGA Champion, Jay Feller, by a score of 12 to 3. Tough start for Jay, who was playing with that dazzling 4 handicap. Let's hope Jay is not still living the dream of 2009 because defending titles in the CGA is like going to bible study drunk - very difficult to accomplish.
BuBu and AyerMayL turned in probably the best golf of any foursome. Rob Burkley shot a 44 to defeat Joe Ayers and Greg May turned in an impressive 42/net 38. Greg's round earned him CGA Player of the Week honors, which is now voted on by you the people.
In the final match, Cork Soakers defeated Shankaportamus in a tight match. I am not sure who won the pace of play battle between partners Jason Diwik and Smokin Joe, but Diwik had a very nice round of 46/net 39. Not sure you will see many of these rounds later in the year as Smokin starts to win the battle and slows the pace of play down to a crawl. Joe, remember you are only as good as all of the golf accessories you bring to the green. Steve Porterfield continued his consistent play in the CGA shooting a 42/39 and actually tied Jason 7.50 to 7.50. That one had to be the most exciting match of the evening. Their partners turned in an equally exciting match as Schoemer and Smokin battled to both shoot 59's. Scheomer won this slugfest 9 to 6.
Webbdog55 was on a bye but showed up to fine tune their gambling skills. Webb took $73 from Brink Doggie to get the year off to a nice start. Brinks, as I have told you many times, never bet Webb on the front side where the tunnels are located. Bet him on the back side only.
Birdies were had by Jason Diwik, Rob Burkley, Steve Porterfield, and Bret Hosket.
Most Pars were made by Brett Southworth (5)
