And now we're back where we started,
Here we go round again.
Day after day I get up and I say
I better do it again.
~Do It Again, The Kinks
Once upon a time there was a fledgling golf league that played at a local muni course affectionately referred to as Trashpage Black. It was one of those pseudo-links courses, which means it had fairways like any other golf course, and large areas of uncut grass to make it look like a links course even though it had about as much in common with a true links course as the elephant exhibit at the Columbus Zoo has in common with Africa. Still, the league flourished there. But after two years the members began to grow disenchanted with the waist-high grass that was located just off the fairways (which probably had more in common with Africa than the elephant exhibit). Perfectly good golf balls would bound unencumbered along the hard fairways until they would disappear forever in the dense don-don. League rounds often extended to more than three hours as each lost ball deserved a thorough manhunt.
It is now ten years later. The group has been comfortably residing at another local public pseudo-links course, but one that is a bit more upscale. Being a more upscale pseudo-links course means that the fairways are wider and the uncut fake links grass is further away from the fairways. It also means the rounds cost twice as much. And for eight years, most everyone in the league was happy to pay for a more upscale (i.e. wider) experience. But lately, many league members are having deja vu. The course has experienced financial issues (as many courses have recently) and so the maintenance budget has been shrinking. The heavy high-high is creeping closer and closer to the fairways. League rounds are extending to more than three hours as balls go bounding down the hard fairways until they disappear forever into the dense don-don (although it does take them a little longer for them to get there). The more things have changed, the more they have stayed the same. And now we're back where we started. Here we go round again.
Will the league investigate a relocation? If not The GC of D, where? Raymond (everybody loves Raymond)? Safari? Back to Trashpage? Or, maybe, do we just need to play better? Has anyone seen the handicaps for this week?
Tonight is Event 7 already. Undy and Shaffer are on a bye. Time for some other teams to make up some space on the leaders. Touch 'em all.
Love,
