Wow, what a week in the CGA. Let's start with player of the week Smarty Jones. Smarty has finally embraced golf "technology" and went low, real low. Smarty shot a 39/30 with daddy's driver. That would be a story in itself, but the real story is he used his mothers' irons. Let me type that again, he used his mother's irons, dad's driver and shot a record 39. His partner, Greg May, had this to say, "Smart back then. Brillant now." Learn more by clicking here. Needless to say, Smarty has found his game, but is there enough time for Greg and him to win the league? Tune in on Monday to see a) what clubs Joe brings to the course and b) what does Joe do for an encore?
Let's move on to the man who has won $4,825 in the CGA. For those of you scoring at home, his name would be Pete Ebel and that is $1,600 over 2nd place KC Budzik. I happened to be playing in the group in front of Pete. My group was getting ready to putt on the third green when out of no where we heard a loud thud. A golf ball had hit a condo roof on the right. Moments later, we heard a very upset male over 50 scream out "Why don't you Fucking Yell Fore" as he threw the ball back over the creek and into the fairway." Note to dude: Why would we yell fore? What is the condo going to do, move out of the way? The best part of the whole story is that Peter has requested the rules committee to research why he could not have played the ball with no penalty from the fairway. The rules committee did research it and because the ball came to rest out of bounds the ball is out of play. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if the guy caught the ball on the fly off of the roof and in one motion as he was yelling "Why don't you Fucking Yell Fore" than I personally would have allowed Peter to play it where the ball lied with absolutely no penalty.
You want more? We had a player kill a bird driving to the course. We had a conflict between two players over the "5 minute rule". The league office will research the conflict from a "rules" standpoint so we can educate the league on when a "provisional" can be disregarded. This rules education you receive is built into your league fees. One other point, the "5 minute" rule has been called in our league. One nameless crony stated "I am going purchase a stop watch and you can bet the house on it, I will be using it every week." Needless to say, it was a grand evening in the CGA. Weeks like this are why we play the game.
Speaking of game, the team race is really starting to bunch up. This Monday will be our last week of the first half. George Brett will take a bye. Chuckie has a 14 point lead over BuBu who is sitting one point over the hottest team in the league WebbDog69. WebbDog69 has been quitely moving up the leaderboard and getting solid play all around. Webb shot a 37 and his partner Brinkman shot a 38. If they keep this up they will be too much in the second half. Look for a great match Monday night as BuBu plays WebbDog69. Who do you want to get knocked off Monday? I think we need to slow the hot team down a bit and Budzik with his inflated 10 handicap might just be the man to get the job done. There is a bunch of golf left to be played and there are other teams that can play there way back into this. Have I mentioned that Smarty is coming hard on the outside? If they turn in another solid week, the league office will be calling Jane and will put an end to this "loaning" of clubs.
Individually, Burkley remains on top as he is trying to be the first golfer ever in the history of the CGA to lead wire to wire. There, the golf gods can take it from there. Greg May is second, followed by Hosket (bye this week) and then the two clowns from WebbDog69.
In other league news, the league office called for a mid season vote. This in it's self is newsworthy. I can not recall the last time the league had a mid-season vote on any issue. The league voted 8 to 4 to remain on the back tees for the remainder of the season. Gentlemen, the league has spoken, we will finish the season at the Golf Club of Dublin. We will finish the season on the back tees. We will continue to lose balls in the rough. We will continue to take 3 hours to play nine holes. It is who we are. Be proud of who we are.
