"That's why they play the games." The last place team of Cork Soakers swept the first place team of Chuckie West. In fact, Chuckie never even took control of the tee box. It is not like Chuckie played real bad, in fact, Andy Shaffer shot the low gross with a 38, it was more about the solid play from Jason Diwik and Smokin Joe. Diwik, fine tuning his game for his golf trip, shot a 41/34 and Smokin added a 53/38. By the way, I honestly thought Joe was going to have a heart attack on the first hole, that is not trying to be funny at all. Joe, relax, we are just out to have a good time and the golf course can not hear you. Not to get all cliche, but you better bring it every week in the CGA or you will find yourself getting swept and never holding honors on the tee box. The league is that good.
The loss by Chuckie made the team race wide open and very very tight. BuBu and Chuckie play each other next week. Two subs will play each other. However, Budzik and Underwood will play each other on Monday, only it will be at Royal Dornoch. Sorry, you can see where my mind is.
Rob continued his "wire to wire" as he killed Schomer 13 to 2 and Greg lost to Brinkman 12 to 3. Just to go on record, I did pick Burkley to win the individual and Chuckie to win the team. Check the paramutual records on Chatfield.
For the first time in league history (not including majors) the CGA did not tee off from the back tees on a golf hole. The league average was a 4.75, with only one birdie being turned in by Rob Burkley. The league loved the fact that bunkers were brought into play that have never been seen. High handicapers who had the luxury of bailing out short of the bunkers now found themselves in a bunker. Also, if the wind would not have been in our face, some people might have driven the hole. I am out next week, or I would be tempted to try the same thing on #7. It just brings in new strategy and has the hole play so differently for all golfers. Sometimes we will play it from the up tees and sometimes we will not. If the league continues with the positive feedback, we will look at doing this on #7 and maybe even some other blind holes. Personally, I would love the idea that when you get to the course one hole each week is played from a different tee. Would bring a whole new element of strategy to our league. However, some (mainly 1 person) people just do not like change.
Anyway, I am off for a golf trip of a lifetime. Here is the lineup:
Saturday - Elie Golf Club
Sunday - British Open
Monday - Royal Dornoch
Tuesday - Nairn
Wednesday - Castle Stuart
Thursday - Troon
Friday - Turnberry
Saturday - Prestwick
Has the Golf Club of Dublin prepared us for these courses? Has all of the bitching about the rough at GCD prepared us? What will our scores look like compared to the GCD?
