Burkley Turns In Historical CGA Round

Let's face it, the CGA has had our share of black clouds. Getting swept by Ogier and his team at Champions has to be at the top of the list. Southy knocking Greg off of the bar stool at BWWW might be a close second. Greg and I bickering like two old ladies surely could be added to the list. Our overall speed of play. But for one special night, Rob Burkley, allowed us to forget all of the black clouds. Rob Burkley turned in the most historical round in CGA history by firing a gross 32 for a net 28. We caught up with a jubilated Rob Burkley after the round.

CGA Reporter: Wow, five birdies and a bogey for a record round of 32. Did you watch Stuart Appleby yesterday?
Rob B: Yea, sure I watch the PGA all of the time. I enjoyed seeing a 59 on television but let me tell you, shooting a 32 in the CGA was much more of a thrill.

CGA Reporter: When did you know you were having a special kind of round?
Rob B: It was right after Tommy Fry bummed his 6th cigarette of the round.

CGA Reporter: Hmmm, that is an interesting response. What was the best shot of your round?
Rob B: It was the bomb of a putt I rolled in on 16. I hit my driver into the high grass, hit a sand wedge out to the fairway, then hit another sandwedge on to the green to about 45 feet and rolled it in for par.

CGA Reporter: Did you ever feel pressure from your partner or your opponent?
Rob B: No, not really. My partner was more of an emotional coach than a swing coach. My opponent, Tommy Fry, shot a 60, so it is safe to say I never felt pressure from him at all.

CGA Reporter: You have never won a season title, but did win a major in 2002. As you appear to be in pretty good shape to win the individual season title, where does this round rank in your greatest CGA moments?
Rob B: First off, there is a great deal of golf to be played. But, if I were to be fortunate enough to win this season, this round will be remembered as the round that put in position to win.

CGA Reporter: There are many other media outlets reporting that your round saved the CGA from more bad press with regard to the Underwood/May match. Do you feel you saved the CGA from more embarassment?
Rob B: Those two guys are real characters. But, I guess that is what makes the CGA special. Having played with Underwood on the Rob-N-Wood team, I assure you he is permantly parked inside of Greg's head. What a great move Underwood did by laying up short of Greg's ball on the green and getting the 2 shot penalty (rule 7-c) he was after. From what I heard it really turned the match around. Will he continue to dominate Greg? Who knows? But I am sure glad that I am on the Underwood Crony Cup team come this September.

CGA Reporter: Well, we will let you sign your card and I am sure give your wife a big kiss.
Rob B: Thanks, I appreciate all you do for our league.

Here is a shot by shot recap from Rob on his round:

Chuckie leads by 20 points over BuBu and 21 points over Webb Doggie. Note, that WebbDoggie has had their bye so it is a very tight race. Burkley, who has led wire to wire, had a 17/5 point lead over Brinkman and Ebel, but they have both had their byes. Looks like Burkley might just go wire to wire.

Date to remember : Black Diamond 8/28 Crony Cup 9/25
