Old School Week One / Black Tuesday

The traditional first week of the season (the one where your not scrambling) started last night under the threat of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.  And while the weather held off just long enough for the Cronies to complete play Monday night, it was storm clouds of a different variety on Tuesday morning that threw the League into its first controversy of the year.  Some were calling it Black Tuesday.

When the CGA IT Department, aka Greg May, began entering the scorecards into the "Software" late Monday night he immediately realized that something was amiss.  Below is Greg's explanation of the problem:

"When setting up the league software for 2012, I neglected to specify the custom handicap calculation parameters for our league, which call for handicaps to be calculated using the player's 6 most recent scores. As a result, the software was using default parameters to calculate handicaps for Week 1 and was calculating handicaps using the player's 10 most recent scores. Accordingly, scorecards printed for Week 1, as well as several reports posted to the web site prior to Week 1, displayed incorrect handicap data. The error was noticed during entry of the Week 1 results and has been corrected retroactively. All reports on the web site reflect the correction and are now accurate."

Below is a summary of how the retroactive handicap change affected each match.  There were no changes at all in the Frys and Shakes versus MoJoe Risin' matches.

An argument can (and probably will) be made that goes something like this....had everyone known what the real handicaps were during the matches on Monday, some might have played differently.  In my opinion this argument has some validity to it but is unable to be proven.  What we know for sure is that all 16 golfers tried their best on every hole last night and wrote a score down for every hole.  I believe the right thing to do is re-run the results based on the corrected handicaps.  This was an honest mistake and I, for one, would like to move on from it and not make a huge deal about it.  I hope you all agree.

Congrats to Player of the Week RYAN WEBB, who shot a 38/36 on his way to a 13-2 beat down of Steve Porterfield.  Webby had back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16.  Honorable mention for POW goes to KC Budzik and Rob Burkley.  Super Sub Dan Freiburger, although not eligible for POW, deserves a shout-out also for his 38/33.
