Season 12 Finishes in Steller Fashion

Steller gutted out a 26.5-18.5 win over Geeez! in the final week of the season to overtake them in the standings and win the League by 3.5 points.  Both individual matches were halved 7.5-to-7.5 but team Stellar was able to win the team match by two for 11.5 points, which was the difference.  And with both Jay Feller and George Tzagournis scoring 7.5 points individually, Feller hung on to the Individual Championship by one point over Tzagournis.  This is Feller's second individual title.  Congrats to Jay, Steve, Greg and George on a great season and an entertaining finish.

Cronies, when a full 15 week season comes down to a few points....a single putt on the last hole....you know that we have had a great season.  And we have a great league.  I hope that everyone comes back next year and that the camaraderie the CGA brings us continues to rule the day.

CGA Heads Into Busy Final Week

The CGA will culminate the end of season #12 with a flurry of activity.  The Cronies will meet-up in Millersburg, Ohio for the traditional CGA Match Play Championship at Black Diamond (see bracket below), and then two days later will meet-up at Hickory Hills for the final week of the regular season.  You will then have the entire off-season to repair any relationships that may have been damaged by your busy August golf schedule.

In Week 14, 'Moving Week' as many like to call it, there was a lot of jockeying for position in the Team Standings race.  Geeez!, led by Greg May's 12.5 point victory over Joe Ayers, took over the lead with a 27.5-17.5 win over Frys & Shakes.  They were aided by See You on Mundy, who handed former leaders Steller a 29-16 defeat.  Steller now stands in 2nd place, 4.5 points behind Geeez!  These two teams will most likely determine the 2012 Team championship on the links in a head-to-head match-up in the final week.  It is possible, however, that a close match between the two teams would leave the door cracked for either Good Luck! (13.5 points off the pace) or See You on Mundy (16.5 points off the pace).  For instance, a 25-20 win for Steller over Geeez! would result in Steller ending up with 356.5 points and Geeez! with 356 points.  In this scenario, Good Luck! would need a 34-11 victory over Frys & Shakes to tie for the Team championship, and See You on Mundy would need a 37.5-7.5 victory over Stickit & Lickit to do the same.  Anything else besides a 25-20 win for Steller next week would make it harder for both Good Luck! and See You on Mundy to claim the top prize, and therefore it is probable that the Geeez! v. Steller battle is for all of the marbles.  Greg May will be giving Jay Feller 4 shots in this match, and George Tzagournis will be giving Steve Geraghty 1 shot.  Please discuss.

In the Individual standings, Jay Feller accumulated 3.5 points despite his absence on Monday.  This is because this was only his second time missing league play this season, and as we all know, your lowest two point totals are kicked out.  George Tzagournis garnered 3.5 points himself in Week 14, thus keeping pace with Feller.  Tzagournis remains one point behind Feller heading into the final week, and although they are not playing each other they will be in the same foursome.....adding even more intrigue into the Geeez! v. Steller match.  Tom Freiburger and Ryan Webb are both 6.5 points off the pace and each can win the League with a big win next week coupled with losses from both Feller and Tzagournis.  Joe Barrett also remains alive for the top individual honor and would need a big win combined with losses from all four of the players ahead of him.

If the Commissioner has his way, the Geeez! and Steller foursome will tee off 15 minutes after the rest of the League next Monday (starting on #1) which would allow for everyone to be able to watch them come up the 9th fairway.

There was a three-way tie for Player of the Week in Week 14.  Greg May, Rob Burkley and Ryan Webb all shot 40/36, and each won their match in convincing fashion.  Congrats to all.

Below is the bracket with initial tee times for Black Diamond.  There was a tie between Tom Freiburger and Ryan Webb for the 3rd seed, which Tommy wins by virtue of his 11.5-3.5 defeat of Ryan in their Week 2 head-to-head match.  Please note that new this year we have calculated (in some cases) different handicaps for the Front 9 and the Back 9.  This has resulted in 8 of the 15 golfers having a higher handicap on the Back 9.  Good Luck to everyone over the next week.

3 Weeks to go in CGA Season

First off, kudos to John Brinkman for shooting a 37/31 and earning Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row.  Brinks is the first player to win three POW's this season.

With three weeks to go in the CGA's 12th season, both the Individual and Team races are shaping up.  In the Individual race, which pays the top four spots, George Tzagournis (104) leads Jay Feller (103) by one point.  A group of three golfers remains in striking distance of Tazz and Feller: Ryan Webb (95.5), Tom Freiburger (95.5) and Joe Barrett (94.5).  Below is a list of each of these golfer's remaining schedule.  The names in bold indicate critical head-to-head matches.

Tzagournis: Porterfield, Freiburger, Geraghty
Feller:  Freiburger, D. May, G. May

Webb:  Burkley, Ebel, D. May
Freiburger:  Feller, Tzagournis, Burkley
Barrett:  Underwood, Diwik, Budzik

The Team race, which pays the top two spots, promises to be just as tight if not tighter than the Individual race.  Stellar remains out in front after a convincing 32.5 effort against Here We Go in Week 12.  A 34-11 win for Geeez! over Stickit & Lickit put Geeez! in 2nd place and knocked our defending champions down to 5th place.  And See You on Mundy grinded out a 24.5-20.5 win over Frys & Shakes to remain in the hunt in 3rd place.  Below is a look at these team's remaining schedules.  The current top two teams are scheduled to play each other in the final week:

Steller:  Frys & Shakes, See You on Mundy, Geeez!
Geeez!:  Here We Go, Frys & Shakes, Steller
See You on Mundy:  MoJoe Risin', Steller, Stickit & Lickit

One thing is for sure....with the 2nd and 3rd place teams still on their schedule, Steller, and any subs they may employ, truly controls their own destiny.

1st Annual Chappy Cup Begins August 6th

Kudos to John Brinkman, your Week 11 Player of the Week for shooting a 41/35...good for low gross and low net amongst League members.  He is also the mastermind behind the 1st Annual Chappy Cup, a head-to-head blind match play tournament that begins this Mundy.  Below is the tournament bracket.  Enjoy!
