Match Play Championship 2015

Out With the Old and In With the New…

On Saturday, August 29, 2015, New Albany Links Golf Course will play host to the Crony Golf Association's Match Play Championship.  In a year of change it seemed fitting to move the major to a local course that many cronies have enjoyed playing this summer.  It seems like everyone's schedules are increasingly busier (see difficulty in scheduling CronyCup date), so staying local and budget conscious seemed to be on target.

New Best Ball Addition
We will continue to use the standard bracket format we have used in years past, with a new twist of Best Ball.

For those losing their front nine matches, you will be paired with the other "non-winner" in your foresome and play the back nine as a team, taking one low net score per hole.

I'm trying to give "meaning" to the 2nd nine for those who lose their initial match.  We've all lost an opening round match and playing the back nine with little purpose seems worthless.  There will be 8 "non-winners" involved in the Best Ball competition ($80 pot).  First place wins $60 and second place wins $20 (essentially their $10 entry fee).

If you win your first match, your $10 fee will be returned to you.

2nd 18 Holes
The first three groups will be "blind draw" 2-man scramble teams.  There will be 6 teams of two in the 2-man scramble ($240 pot).  First place wins $120, second place $80 and third place $40 (entry fee).

If you make it to the final four golfers, you will have your $10 best ball fee and $20 2-man scramble fees returned to you ($30) since you will not be participating in either of these two formats.

The Good News!
New Albany was very welcoming and is only a 25-30 minute drive, especially early in the morning.  Their normal Saturday morning rate is $59, so to block off four times for Cronies and only add $11 for the second nine was very accomodating.

The "over the curb" time of 6:00 a.m. should be very similar to Black Diamond leave times.  And, we should be finished by 7:00 p.m. leaving plenty of time for the after party back in Columbus.  New Albany LInks will be a new test for Cronies and should reward the best player on the day with the Championship.

The Bad News!
This is not an overnight event and there is no driving range.  We'll try something new this year and if it doesn't work, we can talk about different options next year, or it leaves the possibility of having CronyCup outside of Columbus.
