The 2017 season crossed the quarter pole with at least one thing still the same. Magic Bag sat in first place in the First Half Team Standings. In Week 5 they faced off against a familiar foe in Happy Stix, who narrowly defeated them in a playoff to win the 2017 TEA. After trading punches for 27 holes of regulation and 2 playoff holes in the TEA, these two teams took this match down to the final hole. Steve Porterfield sealed the deal on that final hole (hole number 6) with a 4 net 3 that gave Happy Stix a 25.5 to 19.5 win and gave Porterfield a 41/34 and a tie for low net on the night.
Magic Bag's loss opened the door for State Champs and Sloppy Joes, but neither were able to take advantage. State Champs bowed to It's No Ghey 19 to 26, but at least kept pace. Sloppy Joes got taken out to the desert by Good Fellers 7.5 to 37.5, thanks to a 41/34 by Jay Feller, who tied Porterfield for low net., dropping Sloppy Joe's from 3rd place to 6th place in the standings.
Despite the loss in Week 5, Magic Bag still controls the board in the First Half Team race with 3 weeks left to play. That being said, at the end of Week 5, only 10 points separate 3rd place from 7th, and 7th place stands 30 points out of 1st. It still anybody's game, except maybe for Happy Stix, but they won a major so don't feel bad for them.
Sitting atop the Individual Standings after five weeks is Brad Underwood, who is off to the best start of his career. This is a golden opportunity for the Magic Man, and most of the league is rooting for him. Breathing right down his back is defending Champion Ryan Webb, followed closely by George Tzagournis and KC Budzik.
In the Crony Cup Standings, Budzik holds a slim lead on Jud Deshler in the early going. A cluster of players lurking within striking distance includes Underwood, Scott Schoemer, Rob Burkley and Feller.
We head into Week 6 and the heart of the season, Keep stretchin'!
